The Pleasure Trap (book review)… #youarebeingfarmed

The Pleasure Trap by Douglas J Lisle is probably one of the most important books for surviving the modern age.

My take on it is this…

When Homo sapiens first stood upon the Earth we were born into a savage garden where most things either wanted to eat us or were poisonous, and if we wanted to survive and help our children to survive to an age where they could have children we had to learn to navigate that savage garden in a precise way to avoid the predators and parasites and toxic things that live within it.

Fast forward to the 21st century and our savage garden is now capitalism. And the predators and parasites are corporations and the poisonous things are the food and medicine that they sell to us. They lure us in by using our evolved nature – that suited us perfectly upon the Earth thousands of years ago – against us. We are for the most part seemingly defenceless against the tirade of sweet, fat and salty food and medicines that relieve symptoms but never deal with the cause.

But are we defenceless?

Not if you’re aware of the pleasure traps that they have created to enslave you.

Chronic diseases, the diseases that once were the diseases of kings and the ruling classes, are now the diseases of almost everyone thanks to the corporatisation of the food chain and the medical industry. And chronic disease is caused by nothing more than eating too much of the wrong foods and taking the wrong medicines.

Read this book and learn how to avoid the pleasure traps and how to extract yourself from them when you fall into them.

Your future and your children’s future and their children’s future lies within your grasp of the pleasure traps that corporate predators and parasites have placed in the savage garden of capitalism.

So following on from previous criticism of the BBC article…

‘Exercise “not key to obesity fight”‘.

We shall now look at the dietary component of this article.

Almost immediately we are fed these two paragraphs…

They said while activity was a key part of staving off diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and dementia, its impact on obesity was minimal.

Instead excess sugar and carbohydrates were key.

Isn’t it strange then how highly active people who eat a healthy high carb, high sugar diet are not overweight?

This continuous blame put on excess sugar and carbs in the diet is what is causing the obesity problem in the first place.

All too often we’re being told that excess sugar and carbs are the problem, yet very rarely are we told the real thing, that only added, refined, sugars and carbs are the problem.

This leads too many people to looking at labelling like the UK’s traffic light system, which lumps all sugars and carbs into one thing and brands fruit with a red light on the sugars, thus making people avoid the very thing that they should be eating.

Natural occurring sugars and carbs found in whole fruit and veg are not a cause of obesity, they are the cure. They are not a cause of type 2 diabetes, they are the cure. They are not a cause of heart disease, they are the cure. They are not a cause of high blood pressure, they are the cure. The cause for all these is only found in refined, processed added sugars and carbs – the kind that the food industry adds to processed foods…

The other thing not mentioned in the BBC article as a major cause of obesity is excess fat intake.

Fat is 9000 calories per kilogram, carbs and sugar are 4000 calories per kilogram, protein is 4000 calories per kilogram, alcohol is 7000 calories per kilogram and fibre is 0 calories per kilogram. In fact, fibre is negative in calories because it uses calories from your body as it gets passed through your system.

So knowing that, check out this picture…

Strange how the picture on the right is the one that is full of carbs and sugars and yet fills you completely to bursting and far less calories than protein rich and fat rich meals.

That’s the point here.

If you want to lose weight you need to eat good quality fruit and veg and you will lose weight. If you stuff yourself on high protein and fat laden meals you will gain weight because you’ll have to eat far more calories to feel satisfied and those calories are extremely difficult for your body to burn – unlike sugars and carbs which your body can untilise and burn easily.

But even that is not the whole picture. You can eat all the fruit you like and you won’t pile on weight, but eat that same amount of sugar that’s been refined and added to foods and drinks and you will pile it on. Especially when that sugar has been added to foods with fats in – which you find in lots of processed food. Just look at a packet of Doritos if you want an example…

And you can find many more examples like this if you just have a quick look around the supermarket shelves.

If i eat Doritos i will pile on fat – i know because i’ve eaten them occasionally. And it’s because of this low fibre, toxic mix of empty calories, refined fats and sugars and other chemical additives and adulterants that leaves your body in a nutritional wasteland wanting something more to eat because it hasn’t received any real nutrition even though you’ve just stuffed 1000 calories down your throat.

The biggest problem we have now, and the biggest cause of obesity, is processed foods. Mixing pure sugars in fat heavy, protein rich, nutrient poor foods with most, if not all of the fibre removed, is a sure way for the food industry (Big Food) to get you addicted to eating their junk. Firstly you’ll have to eat more calories to feel full. Then because they’ve removed most of the fibre from the food your system will be overwhelmed with the rush of calories from the accelerated absorption caused by lack of said fibre, because fibre slows this down to a manageable level for your system to deal with. And because your system can’t deal with and utilise calories being absorbed so quickly when the fibre is missing, the calories just pile on your body as fat.

The other issue is that because there are very little nutrients in processed food – and chemical added pseudo-nutrients like folic acid don’t work and in a lot of cases can be harmful – your body actually feels hungry quicker because it’s craving the nutrients that it didn’t get with the calories, thus making you go and stuff your face with ever more junk pseudo food causing a never ending loop of hunger and stuffing your face with rubbish that’s masquerading as food. And because this kind of diet is so low in essential nutrients you are not able to exercise to any reasonable level – thus the decent into obesity is fixed and held in place by the diet itself. This is why processed food is addictive, it’s an addictive cycle that can only be broken by eating proper, real, wholefood, natural, nutrient packed, high fibre, healthy food.

Ergo, the solution to obesity… stop eating processed foods. If it’s got a list of ingredients on it then it’s processed food, if it’s not looking like it does in Nature or has been tampered with in anyway, it’s processed food. If it’s smoked, salted, preserved, tinned, freeze dried, it’s processed food. Eat that jumk and you’ll get unhealthy and obese.

Alternatively, you can totally ignore my opinion, stay overweight, and listen instead to these so called experts that the BBC seems to find queuing up to give their expert opinion – but you do realise who is paying these experts to come out with this garbage, don’t you? Big Food and Big Pharma are spending billions on bribing corrupt and unscrupulous doctors and scientists to spread their gospel of lies in order to ever increase the profits for their shareholders, just like the tobacco corporations did before them. And they’ve made it clear that even where the science is completely against them, they will do everything in their power to muddy the waters and sow doubt in the consumer’s mind wherever they can, just as the tobacco corporations did before them – with articles like the BBC one above for example. And with billions to spend on marketing and pseudo science, biased trials and the like, they can sow a lot of doubt and muddy a lot of waters.

And while we’re on the topic of sugar, it’s also important to note that artificial sweeteners are not in any way helpful either, avoid them wherever possible. I’ll discuss those in a further post. Tune back in soon!

Don’t Exercise, It Won’t Do You Any Good… #youarebeingfarmed

So now we have this piece of utter nonsense…

‘Exercise “not key to obesity fight”‘.

Firstly, let get one thing straight. Activity and exercise are not the same thing. Going for a walk is not exercise, it’s just an activity. Bear that in mind if you want to lose weight.

When i walk, which i do briskly, i burn 180 calories an hour. That’s an activity. My heart rate barely ever goes above 100bpm.

When i cycle, at bottom to middle of zone 2, i burn over 360 calories an hour. This is light exercise.

When i cycle at the top of zone 2 / bottom of zone 3 i burn over 450 calories and hour. This is normal exercise.

The difference is what it makes your body do afterwards. The exercise will put into action changes in your body in the recovery period which will make your body far more efficient at burning calories and will also raise your resting metabolic rate, burning even more calories. Activity doesn’t do anything like that.

Exercising for 2 hours a day, i can easily burn 6300 calories a week. That equates to burning 36.4kg of fat a year. That’s 5.7 stone of fat. And that’s just in the exercise period, that doesn’t begin to factor in the extra calories that will be burned in the recovery period due to the exercise, or the increase in resting metabolic rate due to the exercise.

But if i was to go for a brisk walk for two hours every morning i would only be burning 14 kg of fat a year.

I hope you can see the difference?

But even still, if everyone who is overweight just did 2 hours of brisk walking a day that would make a huge difference over a year. Especially considering that i’m only 9.5 stone in weight and the heavier you are the more calories you will burn when you walk.

How do you know what a brisk walk is? Buy a heart rate monitor and use it every time you go for a walk. Buy a good one that you can program your weight into with GPS tracking for speed and distance as that gives you a more accurate read on calories burned. Garmin make great heart rate monitors. Yes, a good one may be expensive, but it will give you many years of happy healthy fulfilled life in return. It’ll be one of the best investments you’ve ever made.

A good, fully GPS, whistles and tinsel, sports watch that tracks everything you do will make you realise just how little you are actually doing. We can so easily convince ourselves that we’ve just walked 8 miles at a brisk pace but a good sports watch will soon tell you that you only walked 5 miles at slow pace. There’s no cheating with these things.

Anyway, for these so called experts to be saying that exercise (and even activity) is no good in the treatment of obesity, one has to ask just what their agenda is. Because i would welcome the chance to go on national television with them and debate this live for the whole country to see. The science is solid in what i have written above. 1kg of fat is 9000 calories. If you burn 6300 calories a week then you will burn 36.4kg or 5.7 stone of fat a year – at least. And as i said above, these figures are for me at 9.5 stone, the heavier you are the more calories you will burn.

Granted, most people could not go out today and start burning that amount of calories straight away. I certainly couldn’t when i bought Waldo last October. But 6 months of riding with Waldo and 6300 calories a week is easily doable. A bit more each time you exercise, a bit faster, a bit further, and within 6 months most of us can easily be burning a huge amount of fat off our waistlines.

Waldo is my ‘Giant Defy 1’ road bike, in case you were wondering.

But then i hear people say, i haven’t got two hours a day to spare. Well i beg to differ. Throw the television away for a start – there’s nothing on it that will make your life any good whatsoever, you’ll just sit there eating crap, drinking crap staring at it going brain dead, staying up late and not getting enough sleep. Not getting enough sleep is a cause of obesity and if you seriously want to lose weight then you need to get a good night’s sleep every night, and staring at a back lit screen before you go to bed does not allow you to get a good night’s sleep. Go to bed at 7pm having read a book for an hour first, and get up at 3.30 and go for a bike ride when there’s no traffic about and the air is cleaner. Stop driving or taking public transport to work and cycle there instead, and start taking detours as you get fitter and faster to make the journey longer and burn more calories doing it. Get a bike rack with big paniers and do your shopping using your bike instead of your car. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

But to say that exercise is no help in treating obesity is just total nonsense.

And the other benefit of exercise is that it improves both your physical and mental health at the same time as burning loads of calories. You will feel younger, happier, more enthusiastic for life. What’s not to like?

Vitamin Supplements Are Killing You… #youarebeingfarmed

Yes, in case you didn’t know…

‘Too many vitamins can give you CANCER, major new study warns the millions who take them’.

Vitamins are of no use outside of their natural packaging. Nature packs vitamins in veg with thousands of other nutrients and minerals that need to go along with the vitamins for them to work properly, that’s how your body evolved to take, store and use vitamins. Taking just the vitamins (and in most cases you’re not actually getting the real vitamin) in a tablet and missing out the rest and convincing that you’re doing yourself some good is a recipe for health disaster.

And reading the above article makes me angry. All this talk about folic acid being a vitamin is nonsense. And suggesting that you can get folic acid from veg is also nonsense.

Folic acid does not occur in Nature. It is a man made, synthetic, garbage chemical that is not good for you. Vitamin B9 is Folate, not folic acid. Anyone who claims that folic acid is vitamin B9 is trying to sell you snake oil.

Folate is found in leafy greens and legumes, have at it, eat as much of those as you like. It’s good for you and doesn’t poison you. Folic acid is made by Big Pharma and the chemical industry to make their share holders more profit, not to make you healthy. Folic acid is bad for you…

And that’s just a little story about B9. You can go through most vitamins and find similar stories.

Other than between Autumn Equinox and Spring Equinox (in the Northern Hemisphere) when you should take a good quality vitamin D supplement (because we didn’t evolve to live so far North away from the Sun) there is no need to take vitamin supplements. Change your diet to get the vitamins you need, there is no health in vitamin supplements.

Burn Off Those Calories With Sex…

Yeah, you’ve all heard the urban myths that having sex burns as many calories as a 3 mile run – or some other high energy physical endeavour. But is it true?

The average time people spend having sex is… 6 minutes!

And a young man will expend about 21 calories in that time.

1kg of fat is 9000 calories.

So don’t go thinking that you’re going to get that weight off fucking every day, you ain’t!

What’s shocking to me is the 6 minutes. Wow! Some people don’t like to waste a lot of time on sex do they? It’s called a ‘duvet day’ for a reason, darlings. If one wanted 6 minutes one would call it a ‘duvet 6 minutes’.

The Truth About Anti-Depressants… #youarebeingfarmed

The truth is that exercise, just 3 short sessions a week is as effective as anti-depressants…

And the side effects from that exercise are all beneficial, whereas the side effects from anti-depressants are horrendous.

One has to ask why the NHS is wasting billions of pounds serving out anti-depressants to people when N.I.C.E. has all this information? Isn’t it now obvious that N.I.C.E. are nothing but corporate whores serving Big Pharma?

This is what is wrong with the NHS. It’s not that the money isn’t there, it’s the fact that N.I.C.E. are spending that money straight into Big Pharma’s corporate profits on medications that serve no good whatsoever, produce a huge long list of side effects and produce ever more ill health requiring ever more expensive treatments on the NHS.

Coffee, Good Or Bad…

SO, the latest spin on coffee is that drinking 3-5 cups a day is good for your heart…

‘Regular coffee drinkers have “cleaner” arteries’.

No doubt there will be people today rushing to starbucks and costa to grab another coffee to ensure their heart health is improved because they only read the bits of the article that they want to hear. But is it so clear and cut as they make out?

Firstly, what coffee were they using and how strong was it? To what extent was it roasted, how much milk and sugar, if any, was added, and stuff like that.

And also to bear in mind is that the South Korean diet is massively different to the UK, European and USA diet. So don’t be thinking chugging down 5 large lattes (whatever they are) is going to do you any favours as it may make things worse.

Here’s some drink for thought…

So maybe instead of going for those extra coffees you might go for a green tea without milk. Although if you’re really concerned about health then try matcha tea instead…

Or cocoa…

Although do understand that it’s made with boiling water and no milk when you want it to be healthy.

If you want the cream of the crop of healthy beverage then i would suggest adding half a teaspoon of powdered peppermint leaves to your cocoa without milk – now that’s will do your health a whole lot of good…

Sure, there’s better herbals than peppermint, but peppermint is still amazingly healthy and it also goes so nicely with cocoa so that’s what makes it the winner in my book.

Just stay away from the coffee. If you’re addicted to caffeine, as most people are, then the theobromine in cocoa will fill all the caffeine receptors in your brain as they both belong to the same group of CNS stimulants, Xanthines. Addicts can replace one with the other, you just won’t get the wired agitated buzz from theobromine.

Reasons To Cycle Early – My First Polecat…

People usually look at me like i’m quite mad when they find out that i go out cycling between 4.30 and 5.00 am.

The main reason i do this is because there’s hardly any mettle monsters on the roads. Not only is this safer, but also a hell of a lot less stressful and also it means i don’t have to breath any of the pollutants that come out of their tailpipes.

No matter where you live the air will always be cleaner in the early hours of the morning, so it makes more sense to do your exercise then if you really care about being fit and healthy. Just stop watching that stupid television in the evenings and go to bed early instead. Today is far more fulfilling if you start with some good exercise and didn’t end yesterday watching a load of soul numbing shite on the moron box.

The other advantage to this, if you have a job, is that you do your post exercise, knackered bit on the company time. No point in ruining your own spare time being knackered after exercise if you can do it on company time!

And the other thing is that there’s also no one around to look at you funny when you ride along talking to yourself or singing songs, which can attract odd looks, to say the least, at more busy times of day when the madding crowd are out and about and being their judgemental selves. A good long cycle ride is a great time to have that conversation with yourself that you’ve been putting off for ages because you don’t want people to think you’re mental when you sit there talking to yourself.

But all that aside, i really do think the best reason for getting out and about so early in the morning is the wildlife. British song birds giving their dawn chorus has to be one of the most beautiful sounds in the world. We really do have the most amazing dawn choruses in this country, and sadly most people will never hear it.

And talking of wildlife, this very morning i was riding out of Otterton to ascend Peak Hill and there, running along the hedgerow in my general direction, was a polecat. All these years i’ve lived on this planet and i had never before seen a polecat in the wild. Such beautiful little animals, their markings all the more striking in the glare of my LED front lights. There is such an abundance of wildlife around early in the morning, just before dawn, and they don’t tend to run and hide from bicycles as they haven’t learned to fear cyclists because we’re such lovely people, so get a bike and get out there and enjoy our beautiful countryside and its wildlife in the peace and quiet.

Do be careful with deer though, you don’t want to go charging towards a rutting stag on a bicycle – somehow i think the cyclist will lose that battle. My advice for when encountering deer is to simply stop as soon as you see them and wait for the deer to move away in its own time. When possible, stand still and enjoy the time you spend with these beautiful animals whenever you’re given the opportunity – it’s something you never get the chance to do in cars as you just tend to kill them as you run them over at 80mph.
